Archeage Guide - Choosing Your Skillsets and Picking a Leveling Class

    Posted: 22 Sep 2019 07:33 AM PDT

Posting this because there are a lot of new players looking to pick a class.

Please check back on occasion as this guide is evolving and is becoming much more comprehensive with feedback from the community.

    --- TLDR Version ---

Pick Battlerage, Sorcery, or Archery as your first skillset

Then pick Battlerage, Sorcery, or Archery as your second skillset at level 7.

Pick Shadowplay at level 15 and continue leveling.

You will be one of the following at level 15:

    Viable Leveling Skillsets: (class name)

    Battlerage/Archery/Shadowplay (Outrider)

    Battlerage/Sorcery/Shadowplay (Hellweaver)

    OR

    Sorcery/Battlerage/Shadowplay (Hellweaver)

    Sorcery/Archery/Shadowplay (Infiltrator)

    OR

    Archery/Battlerage/Shadowplay (Outrider)

    Archery/Sorcery/Shadowplay (Infiltrator)

If you are an absolute new player to ArcheAge.

I recommend picking Outrider, Hellweaver, or Infiltrator.

Outrider lets you have decent melee damage and decent ranged damage while leveling.
Hellweaver lets you have decent melee damage and decent magic damage while leveling.
Infiltrator lets you have decent ranged damage and decent magic damage while leveling.

If you are considering Infiltrator you can also go full magic damage by choosing Sorcery with Malediction.

    Why pick one of these?

These builds offer two types of damage,

These builds don't ruin your progress and you can safely gear for whichever damage skillset you prefer.

You are not stuck with these builds. As you learn the game you can change your skillsets however you think necessary after level 15.

--- Main Guide Continued with Discussion ---

Choose your leveling class based on the TLDR or continue reading for an analysis of other combinations to play.
There are several other viable builds to choose from,

The goal of these leveling builds is to get you to level 50 with the least amount of regret.
Sometimes people pick something interesting at the beginning and as they progress they realize they didn't pick something good.

This guide is to encourage players to pick damage skillsets that support each other and so the player will be set up to make adjustments as they learn the game.

I recommend sticking to a main damage trees (Sorcery, Battlerage, or Archery) because they offer you a lot of damage.
I also recommend picking different damage types because it allows you the flexibility to change your build without having to level a new skillset entirely.

Leveling to 15 is pretty quick. Generally you can pick any skillset you want and be completely fine.
Level 15 is the level where you can change your skillsets.
At level 15 all skillsets become available and will be at already leveled up to 15.
So can swap skillsets at level 15 without losing experience progress.
This makes level 15 an excellent level to change your skillsets without hurting your progress too much.

Talk to the Priestess of Nui standing next to any ressurect statue.
CAUTION! You will only have enough money to make changes 1 or 2 times at level 15.

Another good level to consider changing skillsets is at level 30 if you decide that you would like to become a tank or healer.

Then finally when you get to level 50+ you will have the understanding of the game to change your skillsets and adjust everything to how you want to play.

    Choosing your Leveling Class:

Choose Battlerage, Swiftblade, Sorcery, or Archery as main damage skillset.

    Highly recommend Leveling with Shadowplay

Poison Weapon scales with +Magic Attack

Dropback can be used to avoid falling damage by backflipping before you hit the ground.

Stalker's Mark (level 25) increases Ranged and Magic damage.

Stealth (level 35) helps you avoid undesirable situations.
Note: (all level 30+ zones are pvp zones)

Shadow Training (2point passive) increases attack speed
Become Void (3point passive) increases evasion
Ruthless Assault (4point passive) increases attack speed when triggered
Bloodthirst Intensified (5point passive) Bloodthirst increases damage or healing dealt
Hint: Use Stealth to stack up Bloodthirst for +30% bonus damage or healing dealt

    Recommended leveling Skillset:

    Battlerage/ X /Shadowplay
    OR
    Swiftblade/ X /Shadowplay
    OR
    Sorcery/ X /Shadowplay
    OR
    Archery/ X /Shadowplay

    Choosing Your X Factor!

Consider picking Occultism for your X Factor:

Crippling Mire single target Stun against poisoned target (use Poison Weapon in Shadowplay)

Play Dead makes enemies lose your target, potentially saving your life.

Cursed Thorns (3point active) stuns an enemy 4 seconds after using Cursed Thorns.
-Cursed Thorns 'Impales' enemies, which is a stun with a different name for combo purposes.

Shadow Step (level 20) teleport behind your target enemy or ally.

Boneyard (level 25) trap enemies in a bone circle.
-Boneyard also staggers enemies to cancel movement and skillcasting of enemy.

Hell Spear (level 35) area of effect stun around you.
-Hell Spear 'Impales' enemies, which is a stun with a different name for combo purposes.

Unnatural Speed (2point passive) decreases cast time and increases attack speed
Inevitability (4point passive) Occultism Impales and Stuns never miss

Consider picking Songcraft for your X Factor:

    Quickstep to improve movespeed/mounted movespeed

Double-Time (level 20) for big speed burst

Ode to Recovery (level 25) for some healing

Healing Hymn (level 30) for decent self heal

Zeal (4point passive) gives +30% crit chance when triggered
Disciplined Performance (5point passive) increases crit damage by stacking up Rhythm

Consider picking Auramancy for your X Factor:

Thwart blocks damage from a single attack (up to 5000 damage)
-Thwart also shakens enemies reducing damage they deal

Comet's Boon for big speed burst

Teleportation (level 20) for forward teleport.

Meditate (level 30) for on demand mana refill.

Absorb Damage (2point passive) occasionaly reduces damage by 13% by healing it back.

Consider picking Malediction for your X Factor: (if you have Sorcery)

Mana Bolts mobile spammable magic damage

    Serpent Bite AoE magic damage

Fury (level 20) build malice charges to buff your spells.

Ghastly Pack (level 30) AoE magic damage

Empowered Malice (3point passive) increases Malediction damage by +7%

This is not your X Factor!!

It is /NOT/ recommended to use Defense, Vitalism, or Witchcraft before level 50.
Do /NOT/ pick Defense, Vitalism or Witchcraft for your leveling build!

Optimal Leveling Builds at Level 15+: (class name)

    Battlerage/Occultism/Shadowplay (Executioner)
    Battlerage/Songcraft/Shadowplay (Blade Dancer)
    Battlerage/Auramancy/Shadowplay (Dark Runner)

    OR

    Swiftblade/Occultism/Shadowplay (Immortalist)
    Swiftblade/Songcraft/Shadowplay (Duskdirge)
    Swiftblade/Auramancy/Shadowplay (Augmentor)

    OR

    Sorcery/Malediction/Shadowplay (Fanatic)
    Sorcery/Occultism/Shadowplay (Reaper)
    Sorcery/Songcraft/Shadowplay (Spellsinger)
    Sorcery/Auramancy/Shadowplay (Enigmatist)

    OR

    Archery/Occultism/Shadowplay (Shadehunter)
    Archery/Songcraft/Shadowplay (Ebonsong)
    Archery/Auramancy/Shadowplay (Primeval)

    Going Double Dragon!!

Another thing to consider is doubling up on damage skillsets while leveling to 50.
Double Damage builds are less optimal than the above leveling builds.
Going Double Damage will give you more freedom at 50 by allowing you to easily swap your damage if you change your mind.

Potential Double Damage builds: (class name) [weapons required]

    Battlerage/Swiftblade/Shadowplay (Deathwish) [dual melee weapons]

Battlerage/Archery/Shadowplay (Outrider) [melee weapon and bow]

    Battlerage/Sorcery/Shadowplay (Hellweaver) [staff]

    Sorcery/Archery/Shadowplay (Infiltrator) [staff and bow]

Archery/Swiftblade/Shadowplay (Avatar) [bow and dual melee weapons]

DO NOT go Triple Dragon (triple damage skillsets)

It is /NOT/ recommended to level as three main damage skillsets
Do /NOT/ replace Shadowplay with a third damage skillset while leveling to 50!

    FAQ:

Why didn't you tell me every skills to pick?

I did point you to some important skills with your X factor skillset.

That is kind of the charm of ArcheAge and I don't want to spoil your process of discovery.
There are a lot of potential combos and synergies for you guys to discover on your own.

What about when I get to level 50 and want to play a "Top Rated High Tier Meta Build"?

Do not worry, at level 50 you can level the other skillsets quite easily to catch them up.
However, getting to 50 is mostly about doing mass quests.

ArcheAge quests are 90% kill quests.
By the time I had my main damage skillset to level 55, I had several level 50 skillsets.

Why is it viable to level with mixed damage (having two main damage skillsets)?

I mean, who doesn't want to be a Double Dragon?
Before level 50 most of your damage comes from your weapons.

The weapons you get from quests are usually pretty good for that level range.
Doing mixed damage is not viable after level 50+ when you need to gear up.

How do I level my other skillsets after getting level 50+?

Use your main level 50+ damage skillset with the new skillsets to level them up.
Before spending large amounts of labor you should swap to new skillsets to level them up.

Why is level 50 such a big deal?

ArcheAge has a quest themepark that gets you to level 50 then becomes sandbox end-game.
At level 50 you get access to 'Greater' dungeons.
At level 50 you get access to Auroria.
Having access to Auroria and 'Greater' dungeons greatly increases your gear progression.

Why do I /NOT/ pick Defense, Vitalism, or Witchcraft for my leveling build?

Witchcraft is very difficult to benefit from before level 50.
Defense and Vitalism are much easier and faster to level after getting level 50+.
Tanks and Healers become more relevant at level 50+.

What if I want to tank or heal for the level 30 dungeons?

The level 30 dungeons are kind of easy to just skip.
You can swap your skillset to Vitalism or Defense for the dungeon.

It is fine if your Vitalism or Defense are level 15 for these level 30 dungeons
Only do this if you have a good healing weapon or a good shield and 1hand weapon.
Swap your skillsets back to your leveling build after the dungeon.

What if I absolutely want to level as a tank?

You can swap to Defense at level 30 when dungeons become available.

    Defense needs Battlerage.
Battlerage/Defense/Auramancy (Abolisher) is /THE/ tank build.

You can carry Defense with Battlerage and be fine.
    Battlerage/Defense/Shadowplay (Blighter)

What if I absolutely want to level as a healer?

You can swap to Vitalism at level 30 when dungeons become available.

    Vitalism needs Shadowplay.
Vitalism/Occultism/Shadowplay (Doombringer) is /THE/ healer build.

You can carry Vitalism with Battlerage or Archery and be ok, I guess.

Battlerage/Vitalism/Shadowplay (Inquisitor) [melee weapon, maybe greatclub]
    Archery/Vitalism/Shadowplay (Ranger) [greatclub and bow]

You can carry Vitalism with Sorcery but you won't do any healing.

    Sorcery/Vitalism/Shadowplay (Animist) [staff, need +magic]

What about if I want to level as a Templar, Cleric, or other unusual build?

This is a not a good idea, you should read my guide instead.

Party with somebody that deals damage to carry you and leech their quest progress.

    Vitalism/Defense/Auramancy (Templar)
    Vitalism/Songcraft/Auramancy (Cleric)

Help! I chose to level as a healer and now I'm lost!!?!??

Use Drop Back into Antithesis then spam Holy Bolt until dead (Vitalism/Shadowplay).

Cast Fervent Healing (level 35) on yourself to get Divine Response (5point passive).

Cast Antithesis on yourself to maintain Divine Response

Cast Mirror Light on big baddies to Curse them, increasing damage.

Holy Bolt does more damage with Divine Response
Skewer does more damage with Divine Response

    Is this guide outdated?

These recommendations are based on patch 5.5 with speculation of 6.0 changes.

    Why should I trust you?

You don't have to, these are recommendations. My word is /NOT/ law.

All I did was narrow the list from 220 classes down to about 20 classes.

For newer players this guide might help to narrow down their choices.
For returning players this guide might help to focus their choices.

    Who are you?

I am a veteran ArcheAge player that played during alpha, launch, and every fresh start.
I have seen many people get stuck with a bad build and quit from lack of information.
I published this guide to help set people's expectations of the game.

    Will you do more guides?

I am considering writing a best practices while leveling to 50 guide.
I will give recommendations of things to do and reminders for things easy to miss.

I will write the best practices guide with 6.0 PTS.
Let me know if you are interested. With more interest I am more inclined to make it.

    -TLDR-

    Master Class List from Guide

As a new player I recommend these builds:

    Battlerage/Archery/Shadowplay (Outrider)
    Sorcery/Battlerage/Shadowplay (Hellweaver)
    Sorcery/Archery/Shadowplay (Infiltrator)

As players gain more understanding of the game I recommend:

    Melee Builds

    Battlerage/Occultism/Shadowplay (Executioner)
    Battlerage/Songcraft/Shadowplay (Blade Dancer)
    Battlerage/Auramancy/Shadowplay (Dark Runner)
    Swiftblade/Occultism/Shadowplay (Immortalist)
    Swiftblade/Songcraft/Shadowplay (Duskdirge)
    Swiftblade/Auramancy/Shadowplay (Augmentor)

    Mage Builds

    Sorcery/Malediction/Shadowplay (Fanatic)
    Sorcery/Occultism/Shadowplay (Reaper)
    Sorcery/Songcraft/Shadowplay (Spellsinger)
    Sorcery/Auramancy/Shadowplay (Enigmatist)

    Archer Builds

    Archery/Occultism/Shadowplay (Shadehunter)
    Archery/Songcraft/Shadowplay (Ebonsong)
    Archery/Auramancy/Shadowplay (Primeval)

I also recommend several viable double damage builds for people that still can't decide what to play with weapon suggestions to help them sustain damage:

Battlerage/Archery/Shadowplay (Outrider) [melee weapon and bow]

    Sorcery/Battlerage/Shadowplay (Hellweaver) [staff]

    Sorcery/Archery/Shadowplay (Infiltrator) [staff and bow]

    Battlerage/Swiftblade/Shadowplay (Deathwish) [dual melee weapons]

Archery/Swiftblade/Shadowplay (Avatar) [bow and dual melee weapons]

Is there any site with Nuian Character Template files please?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2019 01:25 PM PDT

Finding it hard to make a decent looking Nuian female char (I usually just pick a preset and change the hair), so I wondered if there was any site that has any custom preset files that we can load and adjust?

Or if anyone here has any decent female Nuian preset files they wish to share? xD

    Thanks.

Witchcraft - underappreciated or just bad with auramancy buffs?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2019 11:31 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I tried to find some opinions about witchcraft skillset but noone actually discussed it since 2 months or so. From what I have read so far people generally avoid it. Why? Is it that bad now and easily countered?

I created a discord to gather all SEA players heading to EU region, advocating Alexander (Unofficial PvP server) as destination. Primary reason is due to way better ping than NA.

    Question concerning gear

    Posted: 22 Sep 2019 01:01 PM PDT

I see people saying you will have a gear set that levels up with you, and this makes me a bit concerned. One of the turnoffs of Black Desert Online was the way gear always looked exactly the same and the only way you could make your character look better was through costumes. I like getting new higher tiered gear and it changing my characters appearance. In terms of appearance, does leveling up gear change at all or is that gear have a certain look that stays static throughout it being strengthened. What options besides cosmetics do players have to change their equipment appearance? Are there great looking equipment sets in Archeage?

Hyped for AA:U - Is legacy/current even worth visiting?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2019 04:19 AM PDT

    Greetings,

So I played ArcheAge during the initial release where great promise was shown and then left when P2W started seeping in (the typical story).

Regardless, ArcheAge has been my favourite MMO that I just wish hadn't taken the direction it did. Now that I'm hyped for Unchained, I'm curious as to whether legacy/current ArcheAge is even worth visiting?

Y'know that mental fixation you get on games occasionally that you're super hyped for and you view every video you can find on it to try to satiate your un-quenched thirst for it? Maybe you don't. But that's essentially the mode I'm in currently.

I recently checked out some videos from 'Cryy', which alluded to the game being 'much better' now than it ever has been in terms of monetisation - with video title(s) such as 'No longer P2W?' etc. In my heart of hearts - I don't buy it at all, as whatever damage has already been done in terms of economy, power creep, etc.

My question to you is should I even bother playing current ArcheAge to 'tide me over', or just put on the patience hat and wait for Unchained?

    Many thanks

    Archeage CC system questions

    Posted: 22 Sep 2019 10:10 AM PDT

I don't really see people talking about CC in Archeage, how exactly does the CC system work? Most MMORPG has different kinds of CC systems

    1. How easily can people break out of my CC in this game? If I for instance play with Witchcraft and Occultism in a 1v1 Arena, how and what makes people be able to break free from my Bubble / Impale?
    2. Is resisting CC a thing? Does it happen a lot? Or can I safely rely on my CC when I press the buttons?
    3. Is there any DR on different CC categories? Is DR even a thing on the same category? i.e Fear->Fear

I do know that Auramancy has quite a lot of premeditated CC immunity they can buff up with, but other than that I don't really know much.. Does PvP trinkets exist like in WoW? Can people "break free" from CC as you can in ESO?

Would just love any insight on it, thanks!

Edit: off-topic question, I'm leaning towards playing a Sorcerer paired with whatever, but I see that most Sorcerer abilities gets a decent Damage bonus on burning enemies. What is the most reliant way to apply a burning effect on people? I do see quite a lot of Sorcerers using that "Flame wall" ability, but that feels clunky and annoying to use before bursting. Any other good options?

    Tank/Tanky Melee Class?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2019 08:55 AM PDT

Hi guys two quick questions (New player here), I've seen a ton of opinions on tanks they all kind of very and i don't know which to take serious and which not so much.

    1. I'm looking for a tank for both PVE (Grinding and Dungeons) & some small scale group PVP with at least some damage (Maybe some AOE) so i don't have to rely on a group 24/7.
Blighter and Abolisher seem to be the two options popping out the most since Skullknight, apparently does 0 damage according to comments.
Which one do u recommend or do u have another tank or maybe the better word would be tanky melee class you'd recommend that can deal some damage?
    2. I've seen a couple of comments that say mixing STR & STA is a bad idea, is there any truth to this?

    Combat system

    Posted: 22 Sep 2019 02:19 PM PDT

Do you guys know if devs thinking about different combat system like non-target/action combat ? I wish If they could add such an option in settings, so everyone had a choice. I know a few games with all 3 different systems combat ( non-target, tab-target and point and click ) and its up to you which one you want... sweet. I wish, I dream if they could add something like that to Archeage.

When is Crit damage/Crit rate cap applied ?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2019 07:18 AM PDT

    Hey,

From what i understand, crit rate is capped at 100%, and crit damage is capped at 300%. When exactly is this cap applied, between the base stat, resilience, buffs and skills with added crit ?

For example, if i had 280% crit dmg, and got an extra 50% crit dmg from buffs (Battle focus, songcraft or anything else), and the target had 5k resilience. Would the calculation be 330% crit damage reduced by 5k resilience, or would the 300% cap apply before applying resilience ?

Same question for skills like Precision Strike which have bonus crit rate/damage which can take you over the cap.

    thanks

New player on Archeage I have some questions!

    Posted: 22 Sep 2019 06:54 AM PDT

So I've just downloaded and played Archeage a bit (bored of Guild Wars 2 atm) thinking about keeping Archeage as my side mmo but it seems that both mmo really suite my taste. I've been hearing about Archeage Unchained recently, is it a different game? Does it work similarly to Archeage? Is it simply just better Archeage that's pay to play? And is it similar to what GW2 does with its pay to play system (transfer gold to premium currency)?

    Does enchantrix work?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2019 05:05 AM PDT

    1. Don't know how the meta works right now, but can i just become a bard with some cc? is it effective? if not how bad it is?I really like the idea of giving buffs and cc'ing people, so even if it's a little bad i think i'll end up playing it.

    2. If it does work i have another question, i should go with club and magic def shield for it? don't know if i'll really need the healing power(maybe if i change to cleric for farming it'll be good)

    3. And if it's really bad then can u guys please suggest something, i like healing but i prefer playing songs or cc'ing ^^, it doesn't need to be the best build around just something i can have fun while playing.

Sorry for any mistakes i said, i'm a noob :)
